What Is An Income Tested Fee?

When you are assigned a Home Care Package(HCP) you may be required to pay some contribution towards this package and this is called an income tested fee (ITF).  It is undertaken by the government and is based on your income only.

The assessment can include, but is not limited to income support payments such as age pension, a service pension, an income support supplement, income from financial institutions, pensions, income from rental properties, businesses, superannuation, annuities, family trusts, shares and income for excessive gifts. It does not include any of your assets, including your family home.

WHO IS REQUIRED TO DO THIS?

Not everyone needs to fill an income assessment fee. It takes a minute to find out if you need to on this link which takes you step by step.

WHAT BEST DESCRIBES YOUR SITUATION?

  • If you are a self-funded retiree, then you will have to fill out a form (SA486) to calculate your cost of care. You will need to print, sign, and post it once it's completed.

  • If you are receiving a pension which has not been means tested, you may need to pay an income tested care fee. It is recommended you complete an income assessment so that Services Australia can work out what this fee will be for you. Download and complete this form here. “Calculation of your cost of care form (SA486)” You will need to print, sign, and post it once it's completed.

  • If you are receiving a means tested full pension(full pensioner) you won't be asked to pay this fee. You should request a fee advice letter from Services Australia on the chance that your aged care provider requests for it. Please call Services Australia on 1800 227 475 or the Department of Veterans' Affairs on 1800 555 254

WHEN SHOULD I COMPLETE THE INCOME ASSESSMENT?

Most people should complete their assessment after they have been assessed for a Home Care Package and before they have entered care. Some people may want to complete their income assessment before they get assessed for an aged care service, to help them understand the costs upfront. Those who have already entered care may need to complete their assessment after they have started receiving care.
